Charge breeding results and future prospects with electron cyclotron resonance ion source and electron beam ion source (invited)

The Californium Rare Ion Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) of the Argonne National Laboratory ATLAS facility will provide low-energy and reaccelerated neutron-rich radioactive beams for the nuclear physics program. A 70 mCi {sup 252}Cf source produces fission fragments which are thermalized and collected by a helium gas catcher into a low-energy particle beam with a charge of 1+ or 2+. An electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source functions as a charge breeder in order to raise the ion charge sufficiently for acceleration in the ATLAS linac. FEL sources: Present status and future prospects (invited)

FEL development has now reached the stage where user facilities are being planned and a number of these are already in operation or very near to completion. All such facilities so far provide sources of infrared radiation and the next step will be to extend this to the ultraviolet and beyond. An elementary introduction to the operating principles and main characteristics of FELs is given, with the emphasis on practical schemes that can be envisaged. Existing FEL sources will be reviewed and progress in the development to shorter operating wavelengths discussed.

Various trends in the development of high brightness synchrotron radiation sources are reported. The ways of increasing the brightness whose choice is governed by the compromise between users, machine, and economic requirements, are discussed. The experimental and technological possibilities of new families of storage rings that are being designed and constructed in different countries are compared. The physical and technical problems associated with the creation of such storage rings are treated.
