Variation of load-deflection behavior with temperatures are studied. Increase in flexural strength and stiffness are observed with the rise in temperature. The mechanical response of a nuclear-grade silicon carbide fiber-reinforced silicon carbide matrix (SiC/SiC) composite was investigated under mechanical loading conditions mimicking the pellet-cladding mechanical interaction (PCMI) phase of a reactivity-initiated accident (RIA). In a RIA, cladding deformation and failure can be induced by the rapid thermal expansion of the nuclear fuel. Thermo-mechanical analysis of SiC and FeCrAl cladding behavior under a loss-of- coolant accident

Alternative cladding materials have been proposed to replace the currently used zirconium (Zr)-based alloys, in order to improve the accident tolerance of light water reactor (LWR) fuel. Of these materials, there is a particular focus on iron-chromium-aluminum (FeCrAl) alloys and silicon carbide composite materials that exhibit much slower oxidation kinetics in high-temperature st eam than Zr-alloys. This behavior should decrease the energy release due to oxidation and allow the cladding to remain integral longer in the presence of high temperature steam, making accident mitigation more likely.
