Nanocomposite polymer electrolytes present new opportunities for rechargeable magnesium batteries. However, few polymer electrolytes have demonstrated reversible Mg deposition/dissolution and those that have still contain volatile liquids such as tetrahydrofuran (THF). In this work, we report a nanocomposite polymer electrolyte based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), Mg(BH4)2 and MgO nanoparticles for rechargeable Mg batteries. Cells with this electrolyte have a high coulombic efficiency of 98% for Mg plating/stripping and a high cycling stability. Through combined experiment-modeling investigations, a correlation between improved solvation of the salt and solvent chain length, chelation and oxygen denticity is established. MgCl ₂ : The Key Ingredient to Improve Chloride Containing Electrolytes for Rechargeable Magnesium-Ion Batteries

The effect of MgCl2 on a series of chloride containing magnesium electrolytes was investigated. In the presence of extra MgCl2, the electrochemical properties of Grignard reagents (RMgCl, R = Ph, Et, iPr) were significantly improved, and the advance of MgCl2 was further demonstrated in Mg-Mo6S8 rechargeable batteries with improved capacities and much smaller over-potentials. MgCl2 was then further proven to be powerful reagent to improve the performance of well-established strong Lewis acid derived magnesium electrolytes including the “all-phenyl” complex (APC) and alkoxide-based magnesium electrolytes. Electrolyte salts for rechargeable magnesium-ion batteries

Magnesium salts suitable for use in an electrolyte for a magnesium ion electrochemical cell are described herein. The salts are magnesium tetra(perfluoroalkoxy)metalates, optionally solvated with up to seven ether molecules coordinated to the magnesium ion thereof. In one embodiment, the salt has the empirical formula: Mg(Z)_n²⁺[M(OCR₃)₄⁻]₂ (Formula (I)) wherein Z is an ether; n is 0 to about 7; M is Al or B; and each R independently is a perfluoroalkyl group (e.g., C₁ to C₁₀ perfluoroalkyl).
