Single crystals of the noncentrosymmetric KNaNbOF{sub 5} polymorph were grown for piezoelectric and triboluminescent measurements. Piezoelectric measurements yielded a d{sub 33} value of ±6.3 pCN{sup −1} and an effective electromechanical coupling coefficient of up to 0.1565 in the frequency range 1960–2080 kHz. Crystals of KNaNbOF{sub 5} were found to exhibit a strong triboluminscence effect visible to the naked eye as blue sparks when crystals are crushed. This triboluminescence effect is uncommon in that it is likely independent from both the piezoelectric effect and atmospheric electrical discharge. Instead, triboluminescence may originate from crystal defects or be related to an electroluminescence effect.more »« less

Hydrothermal crystal growth of the potassium niobate and potassium tantalate family of crystals

Single crystals of KNbO{sub 3} (KN), KTaO{sub 3} (KT), and KTa{sub 1-x}Nb{sub x}O{sub 3} (x=0.44, KTN) have been prepared by hydrothermal synthesis in highly concentrated KOH mineralizer solutions. The traditional problems of inhomogeneity, non-stoichiometry, crystal striations and crystal cracking resulting from phase transitions associated with this family compounds are minimized by the hydrothermal crystal growth technique. Crystals of good optical quality with only minor amounts of metal ion reduction can be grown this way. Reactions were also designed to provide homogeneous distribution of tantalum and niobium metal centers throughout the KTN crystal lattice to maximize its electro-optic properties. Growth of monoclinic ZrO{sub 2} thin, flaky crystals by hydrothermal decomposition of zirconium oxide sulfate crystals

Thin platelike hexagonal crystals of zirconium oxide sulfate (ZOS) with a chemical composition of Zr{sub 3}O{sub 5}SO{sub 4}{center_dot}nH{sub 2}O were previously synthesized by the hydrolysis of an aqueous solution of 2 mol/L ZrOSO{sub 4} at 240 C. The ZOS particles obtained were hydrothermally treated again in dilute sulfuric acid solution (<0.15 mol/L) at 240 C. The decomposition of ZOS and the nucleation and growth morphology of the monoclinic ZrO{sub 2} crystals were automatically controlled with increasing sulfuric acid released by the decomposition of ZOS< and were influenced by the morphology of ZOS as precursors. A hydrothermal route to single crystals of rare earth stannates RE₂Sn₂O₇ (RE = La–Lu) in the cubic pyrochlore structure is reported. Growth reactions were performed in aqueous fluids at 700 °C and 200 MPa with CsF mineralizers in concentrations ranging from 0 to 30 M, with 20 M CsF providing the most consistent results.
