We present that controlling the amount of reverted austenite at room temperature allows for tailoring of mechanical properties in supermartensitic stainless steels. The austenite reversion and stabilization occurs during inter-critical tempering through partitioning of austenite-stabilizing elements. The degree of partitioning greatly depends on the reversion temperature, which dictates the local equilibrium conditions. Atom probe tomography and energy dispersive spectroscopy in transmission electron microscopy were used to study the austenite reversion mechanism in terms of the elemental distribution of austenite-stabilizing, ferrite-stabilizing and carbide forming elements. This work investigates irradiation response in the joints of F82H employed for a fusion breeding blanket. The joints, which were prepared using welding and diffusion welding, were irradiated up to 6 dpa in the High Flux Isotope Reactor at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Post-irradiation tests revealed hardening in weldment (WM) and base metal (BM) greater than 300 MPa. However, the heat affected zones (HAZ) exhibit about half that of WM and BM. Carbide precipitation in martensite during the early stages of tempering Cr- and Mo-containing low alloy steels

The microstructures of a 2.25% Cr-1% Mo-0.15 wt% C steel, and a steel with identical alloying additions but a higher carbon level, 2.25% Cr-1% Mo-0.4 wt% C, have been examined in the martensitic conditions for a variety of tempering heat treatments by transmission electron microscopy and atom probe field ion microscopy. In this investigation, the precipitation of boron-containing M{sub 23}C{sub 6} in the CB2 steel during tempering was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry were used to analyze the influence of temperature on the microstructure and properties of CB2-tempered martensite ferritic steel. The steel was normalized at 1100 °C for 2 h and then tempered at six different temperatures between 690 and 790 °C for 2 h.
