Interfacial fracture energy-mechanical behavior relationship in Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}/SiC and Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}/TiN nanocomposites

Grain boundary-interface dihedral angles in Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}/SiC and Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}/TiN nanocomposites have been measured from TEM micrographs, and the ratio of the particle/matrix interfacial energy {gamma}{sub i} to the alumina grain boundary energy {gamma}{sub gb} has been calculated on the basis of an energy balance condition. The average ratio, {gamma}{sub i}/{gamma}{sub gb}, was found to be 1.21 for Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}/SiC and 0.80 for Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}/TiN. These results, together with estimates of surface energies, have been used to estimate interfacial fracture energies. Fracture behavior of directionally solidified Y{sub 3}Al{sub 5}O{sub 12}/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} eutectic fiber

The strength and fracture of a directionally solidified Y{sub 3}Al{sub 5}O{sub 12}/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} eutectic fiber were investigated. The fiber was grown continuously by an edge-defined film-fed growth technique. The microstructure was characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The tensile strength and Weibull`s modulus of the eutectic fibers were determined in the as-fabricated state and after extended thermal exposure at 1,460 C in air. Relationship of fatigue and fracture to microstructure and processing in Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ fiber reinforced metal matrix composites

The tensile and fatigue properties of three matrices, including commercially pure magnesium, ZE41A (Mg-4.25Zn-0.5Zr-1.25RE), and Al/sub 3/Li, containing 35 vol pct FP Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ fibers were studied as a function of orientation between the loading and fiber axes, matrix composition, fiber volume fraction, and fiber/matrix interfacial chemistry. It was found that the axial properties were controlled by the fiber strength, and the orientation dependence of tensile strength could be analyzed in terms of the critical strains to fracture parallel and normal to the fibers. Two monolithic silicon carbides, NT230 siliconized SiC from Norton Saint Gobain and sintered {beta}-SiC from Coors, and a silicon carbide particulate reinforced alumina ceramic composite from Lanxide, which all are candidate materials for pressurized heat exchangers in coal-fired power plants have been evaluated. The fast fracture flexure strength was measured as a function of temperature. All candidate materials retained a sufficient strength level up to 1400C.
