The mechanical behavior of submicron body-centered cubic (BCC) micro-pillars is investigated by three-dimensional dislocation dynamics (DD) simulations to better understand the governing mechanisms for size dependent plasticity under uniaxial tension and pure torsion. A formula is developed to compute the incremental plastic twist due to dislocation motion in DD simulations. The DD simulations show that different dislocation microstructures are created depending on the loading conditions, which leads to different size dependent mechanical behavior. Single crystal plastic behavior of a single-phase, face-center-cubic-structured, equiatomic FeNiCrCo alloy

To understand the fundamental deformation mechanisms of compositionally complex alloys, single crystals of a multi-component equiatomic FeNiCoCr alloy with face-centered cubic (FCC) structure were grown for mechanical studies. Similarly to typical FCC pure metals, slip trace analyses indicate that dislocation slips take place on (1 1 1) planes along [11¯0] directions. The critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) obeys the Schmid law at both 77 and 293 K, and tension–compression asymmetry is not observed. Although this material slips in a normal FCC manner both at 293 and 77 K, compared to typical FCC metals the CRSS’s strong temperature dependence is abnormal.

Surface electronic behavior of face-centered-cubic iron on copper

We have studied the electronic structure of fcc iron grown epitaxially on (100) copper with ultraviolet photoemission (UPS), surface magneto-optic Kerr effect (SMOKE), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and self-consistent film linearized muffin-tin-orbital (FLMTO) calculations. This study identifies and explains novel characteristic UPS features of fcc iron and a substantial change in the work function compared to bcc iron. The SMOKE measurements show that fcc iron grown on copper has two metastable states lying close in energy. One of these is not ferromagnetic and occurs at room temperature, while the other is ferromagnetic and occurs at 190 /sup 0/C. As shownmore »« less
