Aqueous-phase hydrodeoxygenation of sugar and sugar-derived molecules can be used to produce a range of alkanes and oxygenates. In this paper, we have identified the reaction intermediates and reaction chemistry for the aqueous-phase hydrodeoxygenation of sorbitol over a bifunctional catalyst (Pt/SiO2–Al2O3) that contains both metal (Pt) and acid (SiO2–Al2O3) sites. A wide variety of reactions occur in this process including Csingle bondC bond cleavage, Csingle bondO bond cleavage, and hydrogenation reactions. Elucidating the Active Site and the Role of Alkali Metals in Selective Hydrodeoxygenation of Phenols over Iron-Carbide-based Catalyst

Abstract Iron‐carbide‐based catalysts have been explored in the selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenol, aiming at elucidating the role of active site and alkali metal. Complementary characterization such as X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy, together with catalytic evaluations revealed a rapid structural reconstruction of iron carbide (Fe ₃ C) catalysts, leading to a stable defective graphene‐covered metallic Fe active phase (G@Fe) under reaction conditions. Although Pd/Fe bimetallic catalysts have been extensively studied in vapor-phase hydrodeoxygenation of phenolics (i.e., guaiacol, cresol), little is yet known about their performance in liquid-phase reactions. In this work, we present a mechanistic study on the Pd/Fe bimetallic catalysts in liquid-phase hydrodeoxygenation of phenolics. The role of tautomerization in hydrodeoxygenation of the lignin-derived phenolics, particularly for ring saturation, is systematically studied by employing two representative modeling compounds: phenol (a molecule that is keto-enol tautomeric) and diphenyl ether (a molecule that does not allow ketol-enol tautomerization). Vapor-Phase Hydrodeoxygenation of Guaiacol to Aromatics over Pt/HBeta: Identification of the Role of Acid Sites and Metal Sites on the Reaction Pathway

Hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol, a phenolic compound derived from lignin fraction of biomass, over a Pt/HBeta catalyst at 350 °C and atmospheric pressure produces benzene, toluene, xylenes, and C9+ aromatics with yield of 42%, 29%, 12%, and 5%, respectively. Reaction pathways for conversion of two functional groups (hydroxyl and methoxyl) over the bifunctional catalyst were studied.
