The dynamics of high strain rate shock waves driven by a subnanosecond laser pulse in thin tin slabs have been investigated. These shocks, with pressure up to 1 Mbar, have been diagnosed with an 800 nm wavelength ultrafast laser pulse in a pump-probe configuration, which measured reflectivity and two-dimensional interferometry of the expanding rear surface. Time-resolved rear surface expansion data suggest that we reached pressures necessary to shock melt tin upon compression. Reflectivity measurements, however, show an anomalously high drop in the tin reflectivity for free standing foils, which can be attributed to microparticle formation at the back surface whenmore » the laser-driven shock releases.« less

The La{sub 1/3}Zr{sub 2}(PO{sub 4}){sub 3} NASICON-type compound (S.G. P3-bar - neutron and X-ray diffraction experiments) is investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique, selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM), in order to study locally the lanthanum distribution. An irreversible structural transformation (P-bar -bar -bar ->P-bar c-bar ->R-bar -bar -bar ) is observed, without modification of the atomic content and cell size, as soon as the phase is illuminated by the electron beam. Plate impact, shock wave experiments provide a unique method to investigate the time-dependent mechanisms and the kinetics associated with pressure-induced phenomena, such as chemical reactions and phase transformations. The very rapid and well defined loading conditions associated with plate-impact experiments permit real-time examination of the shock-induced changes. Further, the ability to propagate the shock wave along various crystallographic directions provides the means to perform careful analysis of the stress and orientational dependence.
