We investigate the impact of spin anisotropic interactions, promoted by spin-orbit coupling, on the magnetic phase diagram of the iron-based superconductors. Three distinct magnetic phases with Bragg peaks at (π,0) and (0, π) are possible in these systems: one C₂ (i.e., orthorhombic) symmetric stripe magnetic phase and two C₄ (i.e., tetragonal) symmetric magnetic phases. While the spin anisotropic interactions allow the magnetic moments to point in any direction in the C₂ phase, they restrict the possible moment orientations in the C₄ phases. Local Orthorhombicity in the Magnetic $C_{4}$ Phase of the Hole-Doped Iron-Arsenide Superconductor ${Sr}_{1 - x} {Na}_{x} {Fe}_{2} {As}_{2}$

We report on temperature-dependent pair distribution function measurements of Sr_1-xNa_xFe₂As₂, an iron-based superconductor system that contains a magnetic phase with reentrant tetragonal symmetry, known as the magnetic C4 phase. Quantitative refinements indicate that the instantaneous local structure in the C4 phase comprises fluctuating orthorhombic regions with a length scale of ~2 nm, despite the tetragonal symmetry of the average static structure. Additionally, local orthorhombic fluctuations exist on a similar length scale at temperatures well into the paramagnetic tetragonal phase.
