Open strings as Z sub 2 minus orbifolds of closed strings

This paper presents a modular invariant formulation of the open string in terms of the closed string. Chan-Paton factors are understood as multiplicities which arise from a factorization of the closed string. This interpretation of the Chan-Paton factors suggests that the SO(2{sup 3/2}) open string is consistent to all orders of the loop expansion. The authors show that the open string may be viewed as a Z{sub 2}-orbifold of the closed string. Relations are found between various string theories which seem to reinforce an earlier suggestion by Freund that all string theories are derivable from the D = 26 orientablemore » closed bosonic string.« less

Interactions of strings compactified on orbifolds

It is very important to understand the process of string compactification before one can extract any reliable phenomenology. We consider an exactly solvable method of string compactification, in which the internal space is an orbifold. We compute various interaction amplitudes and describe how other amplitudes can be calculated. Multi-valued string variables are handled by formulating the amplitudes on covering spaces where they become single-valued. In the computation of the amplitudes, stretched string intermediate states give rise to expressions that are non-perturbative from the non-linear sigma model point of view. The reaction of PhP(S)[N(Me)NH[sub 2]][sub 2] (1) with (i-Pr)[sub 2]PCl gave the new long-chain diphosphine ligand PhP(S)[N(Me)NHP(i-Pr)[sub 2]][sub 2] (2) in good yields. The reactions of the new ligand 2 with [Mo(CO)[sub 4](NHC[sub 5]H[sub 10])[sub 2]], PtCl[sub 2](COD), and PdCl[sub 2](PhCN)[sub 2] gave the eight-membered metallacylcic compounds cis-[Mo(CO)[sub 4]][PhP(S)[N(Me) NHP(i-Pr)[sub 2]][sub 2]] (3), cis-[PtCl[sub 2][PhP(S) [N(Me) NHP-(i-Pr)[sub 2]][sub 2]] (4), and cis-[PdCl[sub 2][PhP(S)[N(Me) NHP(i-Pr)[sub 2]][sub 2]]] (5) in good yields. Condensation of oxamidrazone with sulfur dichloride in acetonitrile affords 4,4`-bis-(1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolium) dichloride in moderate yield. Reduction of this salt with triphenylantimony yields the diradical 4,4`-bis(1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl) [S{sub 2}N{sub 2}C-CN{sub 2} S{sub 2}], which has been isolated and characterized in the solid state as its dimer [S{sub 2}N{sub 2}C-CN{sub 2}S{sub 2}]{sub 2}.
