Association of residential energy efficiency retrofits with indoor environmental quality, comfort, and health: A review of empirical data

This paper reviews empirical data from evaluations of the influence of residential energy efficiency retrofits on indoor environmental quality conditions and self-reported thermal comfort and health. The data were extracted from 36 studies described in 44 papers plus two reports. Nearly all reviewed studies were performed in Europe or United States. Most studies evaluated retrofits of homes with low-income occupants. Indoor radon and formaldehyde concentrations tended to increase after retrofits that did not add whole-house mechanical ventilation. Study-average indoor concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and volatile organic compounds other than formaldehyde increased and decreased with approximately equal frequency. Health effects associated with global climate change: A role for environmental mutagens?

This commentary discusses the role the scientists who study environmental mutagens have in evaluating the health effects of climate change. The author feels that the possibility that mutagens secondary to climatic changes could affect human health directly (somatic mutation/cancer) as well as indirectly (mutagenesis of pathogens and their vectors) is intriguing, and that scientists in the area are well equipped to play a pivital role.

On September 12-13, 1991, the Indoor Air Quality and Total Human Exposure Committee of EPA`s Science Advisory Board (SAB) reviewed the Agency`s Draft Final Exposure Assessment Guidelines. This is the latest revision of the Agency`s exposure guidelines, the SAB having reviewed and provided advice on earlier versions in 1986 and 1988.

Technical Report

A systematic study was designed to assess the nature and spatial distribution of employee health symptoms and comfort concerns in the Madison Building of the Library of Congress (LOC), Washington, DC. This report presented the multivariate analyses of all the study results. The primary associations observed in all the gathered data both in consistency and magnitude, were observed between health symptoms and both the perception of thermal comfort and the perception of odors. Assessing the Health Benefits of Urban Air Pollution Reductions Associated with Climate Change Mitigation (2000-2020): Santiago, Sao Paulo, Mexico City, and New York City

Journal Article - Science and Environmental Health Perspectives

To investigate the potential local health benefits of adopting greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation policies, developed scenarios of GHG mitigation for Mexico City, Mexico; Santiago, Chile; Sao Paulo, Brazil; and New York, New York, USA using air pollution health impact factors appropriate to each city. These findings illustrated that GHG mitigation can provide considerable local air pollution-related public health benefits to countries that choose to abate GHG emissions by reducing fossil fuel combustion.
