Abstract Research on advanced thermal barrier coating ( TBC ) materials capable of operating beyond 1200°C has primarily focused on the rare earth zirconate pyrochlores, particularly gadolinium zirconate (Gd ₂ Zr ₂ O ₇ – GZO ). The drawback of this material is a significant reduction in durability due to a low fracture toughness. Factors affecting the microstructural stability and durability of thermal barrier coatings fabricated by air plasma spraying: TBC microstructural stability and durability

The high-temperature behavior of high-purity, low-density (HP-LD) air plasma sprayed (APS) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) with NiCoCrAlY bond coats deposited by argon-shrouded plasma spraying is described. The high purity yttria-stabilized zirconia resulted in top coats which are highly resistant to sintering and transformation from the metastable tetragonal phase to the equilibrium mixture of monoclinic and cubic phases. The thermal conductivity of the as-processed TBC is low but increases during high temperature exposure even before densification occurs. For increased efficiency of Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plants, higher gas turbine inlet temperature (> 1300ºC) is needed. At such high temperature the durability of metallic components of the gas turbine is a concern.
