While all calorimeters allow estimation of energy depositions in their active material, dual-readout calorimeters aim to provide additional information on the light produced in the sensitive media via, for example, wavelength and polarization, and/or a precision timing measurements, allowing an estimation of the shower-by-shower particle content. Dual Readout Calorimetry for High-Quality Energy Measurements - Chapter 3 R&D for Future Particle Physics Experiments (Task B)

We report of the design, constrcution, commissioning, and beamtests of a prototype calorimeter. This calorimeter is of a novel design so as to equalize its response to electromagnetic and hadronic energy deposits of equal primary energy. Thus its response to jets is independent of the jet's electromagnetic versus hadronic composition. The beamtests show that the prototype satisfies the design requirements. The design, construction and the results of beamtests have been published in several papers in a refereed journal.

This document constitutes the final report on the project Dual-Readout Calorimetry for High-Quality Energy Measurements. The project was carried out by a consortium of US and Italian physicists, led by Dr. Richard Wigmans (Texas tech University). This consortium built several particle detectors and tested these at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. The idea arose to use scintillating crystals as dual-readout calorimeters.
