Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves were observed at multiple observatory locations for several hours on 17 January 2013. During the wave activity period, a duskside relativistic electron precipitation (REP) event was observed by one of the Balloon Array for Radiation belt Relativistic Electron Losses (BARREL) balloons and was magnetically mapped close to Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) 13. The stress and strain rate in a circumferentially notched tensile bar with an OD ten times the root radius was calculated using the HEMP computer program. The location of the maximum principal stress and mean stress shifts from near the notch toward the axis of symmetry as the specimen is strained. (FS)

Computer simulation of the Charpy V-notch toughness test

The dynamic Charpy V-notch test was simulated on a computer. The calculational models (for A-533 Grade B class 1 steel) used both a rounded and a flat-tipped striker. The notch stress/strain state was found to be independent of the three-point loading type and was most strongly correlated with notch-opening displacement. The dynamic stress/strain state at the time of fracture initiation was obtained by comparing the calculated deformed shape with that obtained in interrupted Charpy V-notch tests where cracking had started. The high standing-wave ratio (SWR) in a model simulator in the mid-frequency range defined by kh = 2 pi h/delta approx. = 2 pi (where h is the height of the parallel-plate region) is investigated experimentally. It is shown that the isolated deep minimum or notch is due to the mutual cancellation of the imaginary parts of the TM01 and TEM modes. The effects on the SWR and the deep minimum of changes in the magnitude and location of the termination resistance are investigated.
