We present results from a detailed experimental investigation of LaFeAsO, the parent material in the series of ``FeAs'' based oxypnictide superconductors. Upon cooling this material undergoes a tetragonal-orthorhombic crystallographic phase transition at ~160 K followed closely by an antiferromagnetic ordering near 145 K. Analysis of these phase transitions using temperature dependent powder X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements is presented. A magnetic moment of ~0.35 Bohr magneton per iron is derived from Mossbauer spectra in the low temperature phase. Previous heat capacity (C{sub p}) and linear thermal expansivity ({alpha}) data for the hexagonal {alpha}-LuH{sub x} and LuD{sub x} [LuH(D){sub x}] single crystal alloys (x=0,&hthinsp;0.005,&hthinsp;0.053) [C. A. Swenson, Phys. Rev. B {bold 53}, 3680 (1996)] have been extended to LuH{sub 0.148}. A feature (a transition) near 170 K in {alpha} vs {ital T} for LuH{sub 0.053} crystals is much more pronounced for the present results, with the {ital c}-axis ({ital a}-axis) data showing an almost 40{percent} (30{percent}) decrease (increase) in {alpha} on cooling below 170 K. HEAT CAPACITY, THERMAL EXPANSION AND ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY OF AN 8 a/o ALUMINUM-PLUTONIUM (DELTA-PHASE STABILIZED) ALLOY BELOW 300 K

The heat-capacity and thermal-expansion data for a deltaphase stabilized aluminum-plutonium alloy are represented by curves and least-squares equations for the temperature region below 300 deg K. A curve for electrical resistivity of the alloy is given. The results of physical measurements indicate the major role of time-dependent cooperative phenomena. Values of the electronic contribution coefficient, Debye characteristic temperature, entropy, and enthalpy are reported, and comparisons are made of the observed behavior of high-purity plutonium and the stabilized alloy. Elastic modulus, thermal expansion, and specific heat at a phase transition

The interrelation of the elastic modulus, thermal-expansion coefficient, and specific heat of a transformed phase relative to the untransformed phase is calculated assuming a particular but useful form of the thermodynamic potential. For second-order phase transitions where this potential applies, measurements of modulus, expansion, and specific heat can yield the general (longitudinal as well as shear) first- and second-order stress (or strain) dependences of the transition temperature and of the order parameter at absolute zero. An exemplary application to one type of phase transition is given. (AIP)

Despite the fact that all chemical bonds expand on heating, a small class of materials shrinks when heated. These, so called negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials, are a unique class of materials with some exotic properties. The present chapter offers insight into the structural aspects of pressure- (or temperature-) induced phase transformations, and the energetics of those changes in these fascinating materials, in particular NTE compound cubic ZrW2O8, orthorhombic Sc2W3O12 and Sc2Mo3O12, as well as other members of the 'scandium tungstate family'.
