Wind load and life-cycle testing of second generation heliostats

As technical manager of the Second Generation Heliostat development contracts for the Department of Energy, Sandia National Laboratories has evaluated four heliostat designs. The evaluation of the heliostats included the life-cycling and simulated wind load testing of prototype heliostats and foundations. All of the heliostats had minor problems during this testing; as a result, specific design improvements were identified for each drive mechanism and for two of the four foundations.

The effect of blade row axial spacing on vortical and potential disturbances and gust response is studied for a compressor stator/rotor configuration near design and at high loadings using two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes and potential codes, both written for multistage calculations. First, vortical and potential disturbances downstream of the isolated stator in the moving frame are defined; these disturbances exclude blade row interaction effects. Wind oscillatory and gusting torque effect on a power system

The dynamics of a wind turbine driven induction machine and the power system to which it is connected in a dispersed mode are described. The sources of disturbances are identified as ramp and low frequency cyclic turbine torque variations as a consequence of sharp fronted wind gusts and tower shadow, rotor unbalance, etc. Studies have been performed for two levels of wind energy penetration in a single area power system and in a multiarea interconnected power system. Results show that substantial wind energy penetration levels can be handled in a multiarea power system. 8 references.
