Analytic and field studies have shown that when the solar heat is taken into account, the standard consumption of fuel for the heating of buildings can be substantially reduced. The standard consumption of fuel for the heating and ventilation of buildings in the southern regions of the USSR must take into account the heat carried by solar radiation. This will reduce capital and running costs, and will result in fuel economy.
Performance characteristics of a system designed for stratified cooling operating during the heating season

Experiments were conducted in a full-sized facility to determine the heating-season behavior of a system designed to produce stratified air conditioning during cooling-season operation. The experiments were designed to produce information on space air temperature profiles and on heating load magnitude as a function of system geometry and indoor and outdoor temperature conditions. It was found that significant stratification did not occur at any of the conditions tested. The measured heating load was equivalent to that which would be determined for a conventional system at a uniform indoor temperature.
Thermal analysis of a piston cooling system with reciprocating heat pipes

The reciprocating heat pipe is a very promising technology in engine piston cooling, especially for heavy-duty diesel engines. The concept of the reciprocating heat pipe is verified through the experimental observation of a transparent heat pipe and by thermal testing of a copper/water reciprocating heat pipe. A comparative thermal analysis on the reciprocating heat pipe and gallery cooling systems is performed. The approximate analytical results show that the piston ring groove temperature can be significantly reduced using heat pipe cooling technology, which could contribute to an increase in engine thermal efficiency and a reduction in environmental pollution.
