Seismic transient deconvolution with model-based signal processing

Short duration seismic disturbances, obscured by earth noise and distorted by the seismometers used to measure them, can be reconstructed using model-based signal processing. Model based means that mathematical models of the seismic transient, earth noise, and seismometer dynamics are infused into the signal processor that estimates the disturbance. The processor imposes no predetermined structure on the transient and the earth noise need not be white. Model-based processors produce good quality estimates for a broad class of transient waveforms.

Deconvolution of noisy transient signals: a Kalman filtering application

The deconvolution of transient signals from noisy measurements is a common problem occuring in various tests at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The transient deconvolution problem places atypical constraints on algorithms presently available. The Schmidt-Kalman filter, a time-varying, tunable predictor, is designed using a piecewise constant model of the transient input signal. A simulation is developed to test the algorithm for various input signal bandwidths and different signal-to-noise ratios for the input and output sequences. The algorithm performance is reasonable.
Deconvolution/identification techniques for 1-D transient signals

This paper discusses a variety of nonparametric deconvolution and identification techniques that we have developed for application to 1-D transient signal problems. These methods are time-domain techniques that use direct methods for matrix inversion. Therefore, they are not appropriate for large data'' problems. These techniques involve various regularization methods and permit the use of certain kinds of a priori information in estimating the unknown. These techniques have been implemented in a package using standard FORTRAN that should make the package readily transportable to most computers. Little is known about the impact of surface transient storage (STS) zones on reach-scale transport and the fate of dissolved nutrients in streams. Exchange with these locations may influence the rates of nutrient cycling often observed in whole-stream tracer experiments, particularly because they are sites of organic matter collection and lower flow velocities than those observed in the thalweg. Full multiple scattering (FMS) Minuit XANES (MXAN) has been combined with laser pump-probe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to determine the structure of photoexcited Ni(II)tetramesitylporphyrin, Ni(II)TMP, in dilute toluene solution. It is shown that an excellent simulation of the XANES spectrum is obtained, excluding the lowest-energy bound-state transitions. In ground-state Ni(II)TMP, the first-shell and second-shell distances are, respectively, d(Ni-N) = (1.93 {+-} 0.02) {angstrom} and d(Ni-C) = (2.94 {+-} 0.03) {angstrom}, in agreement with a previous EXAFS result.
