Single crystals of Ln{sub 2}Ru{sub 3}Al{sub 15+x} (Ln=Gd, Tb) have been grown using the self-flux method under Ru-poor conditions. The structure of the Gd analog is found to be highly dependent on the synthesis method. Gd{sub 2}Ru{sub 3}Al{sub 15.08} orders antiferromagnetically at 17.5 K. Tb{sub 2}Ru{sub 3}Al{sub 15.05} enters an antiferromagnetic state at 16.6 K followed by a likely incommensurate-to-commensurate transition at 14.9 K for crystals oriented with H//ab. For crystals oriented with H//c, a broad maximum is observed in the temperature dependent M/H, indicative of a highly anisotropic magnetic system with the hard axis in the c-direction. The new compounds Ln{sub 3}TSe{sub 6} (Ln = Sm, Gd; T = In, Cr) and Tb{sub 3}CrSe{sub 6} have been synthesized by the solid-state reactions of the elements at 850 C. A KBr flux was used to promote crystal growth. These isostructural compounds crystallize with the U{sub 3}ScS{sub 6} structure type. The crystal structure is built from LnSe{sub 7} pseudo-octahedra or LnSe{sub 8} bicapped trigonal prisms and TSe{sub 6} octahedra. Magnetic measurements show that Sm{sub 3}TSe{sub 6} (T = In, Cr) and Tb{sub 3}CrSe{sub 6} are paramagnetic down to 5 K whereas Gd{sub 3}CrSe{sub 6} undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition atmore » 10 K.« less

Three rare earth borosilicate oxyapatites, RE {sub 5}Si{sub 2}BO{sub 13} (RE=La, Gd, Y), were synthesized via wet chemical method, of which RE {sub 5}Si{sub 2}BO{sub 13} (RE=Gd, Y) were first reported in this work. In the three oxyapatites, [BO{sub 4}] and [SiO{sub 4}] share the [TO{sub 4}] tetrahedral oxyanion site, and RE {sup 3+} ions occupy all metal sites. The differential scanning calorimetry-thermo gravimetry measurements and high temperature powder X-ray diffraction pattern revealed a vitrification process within 300-1200 deg.
