Development of cheap, green and up scalable production methods for graphene is one of the most challenging problems in its manufacture on an industrial scale. We report here a large scale substrate-free fluidized bed catalytic chemical vapour deposition (FB-CCVD) process for few layer graphene (FLG) powder production that uses a crystalline oxide catalyst of the general formula A(x)B(3-x)O(4), wherein the FLG layer thickness and domain sizes can be varied. The metal-to-insulator phase transition (MIT) in low-dimensional materials and particularly two-dimensional layered semiconductors is exciting to explore due to the fact that it challenges the prediction that a two-dimensional system must be insulating at low temperatures. Thus, the exploration of MITs in 2D layered semiconductors expands the understanding of the underlying physics. Here we report the MIT of a few-layered MoSe₂ field effect transistor under a gate bias (electric field) applied perpendicular to the MoSe₂ layers. With low applied gate voltage, the conductivity as a function of temperature from 150 K to 4 K shows typical semiconducting to insulating character.more »« less

Disclosed is monolayer and/or few-layer graphene on metal or metal-coated substrates. Embodiments include graphene mirrors. In an example, a mirror includes a substrate that has a surface exhibiting a curvature operable to focus an incident beam onto a focal plane. A graphene layer conformally adheres to the substrate, and is operable to protect the substrate surface from degradation due to the incident beam and an ambient environment.
