In the vast majority of plasmas produced in the JET tokamak the x-ray emission at energies above about 1 keV is dominated by bremsstrahlung radiation from the background deuterium ions, and both bremsstrahlung and recombination radiation from one or two light impurity species such as beryllium and carbon. Under these circumstances local values of impurity densities and concentrations, or alternatively of the effective charge {ital Z}{sub eff} of the ion mixture, are derived from tomographic measurements of the local x-ray emissivity at energies above 1--3 keV, in conjunction with measurements of electron density and temperature profiles. Measuring one-dimensional and two-dimensional impurity density profiles on TEXTOR using combined charge exchange-beam emission spectroscopy and ultrasoft x-ray tomography

Two techniques are presented that allow us to measure impurity density profiles in the TEXTOR tokamak plasma. The one-dimensional profiles are gathered by charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) in combination with beam emission spectroscopy (BES). Combining CXRS and BES eliminate the need for absolute calibration. For two-dimensional profiles an ultrasoft x-ray tomography system has been developed. The system is spectrally resolved and produces local emissivity profiles of several ionization stages of impurities. Both systems are presently being commissioned. They are complementary and give an insight into the impurity distribution and transport in plasmas.

First Measurement of the Left-Right Charge Asymmetry in Hadronic {ital Z} Boson Decays and a New Determination of sin{sup 2}{ital {theta}}{sup eff}{sub {ital W}}

We present the first measurement of the left-right charge asymmetry A{sup obs}{sub Q} in hadronic Z boson decays. This was performed at E{sub c.m.}=91.27 GeV with the SLD at the SLAC Linear Collider with a polarized electron beam. Using 89838 events we obtain A{sup obs}{sub Q}=0.225{plus_minus}0.056{plus_minus}0.019, which leads to a measurement of the electron left-right asymmetry parameter, A{sub e}=0.162{plus_minus}0.041{plus_minus}0.014, and sin{sup 2} {theta}{sup eff}{sub W}=0.2297{plus_minus}0.0052{plus_minus}0.0018. Also, the A{sup obs}{sub Q} measurement combined with the left-right cross section asymmetry determines A{sub e} independent of the value of the electron-beam polarization. {copyright} {ital 1996} {ital The American Physical Society}

We present a measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry (A{sub FB}) in pp{yields}Z/{gamma}*+X{yields}e{sup +}e{sup -}+X events at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using 1.1 fb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A{sub FB} is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the electron-positron pair, and found to be consistent with the standard model prediction. The Talbot–Lau x-ray moiré deflectometer is a powerful plasma diagnostic capable of delivering simultaneous refraction and attenuation information through the accurate detection of x-ray phase shift and intensity. The diagnostic can provide the index of refraction n=1₋δ + iβ of an object (dense plasma, for example) placed in the x-ray beam by independently measuring both δ and β, which are directly related to the electron density n_e and the attenuation coefficient μ respectively.
