Prediction of extended x-ray-absorption fine-structure spectra from molecular interaction models: Na{sup +}(H{sub 2}O){sub n}-MgO(100) interface

A theoretical approach is presented that can be used to model extended x-ray-absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectra for complex systems at finite temperatures. This method has the ability to compute, directly, the effects of thermal motion on EXAFS spectra and to deconvolve the EXAFS signal into contributions from individual scattering paths. Classical molecular-dynamics simulations of the interface are used to generate configurations corresponding to a given temperature and are used to compute the Debye-Waller factors for {ital all} (single and multiple) scattering paths. The electronic states and local structures of photomagnetic CuMo cyanides, Cu{sub 2}Mo(CN){sub 8}{center_dot}H{sub 2}O and Cs{sub 0.5}Cu{sub 1.75}Mo(CN){sub 8}{center_dot}1.5H{sub 2}O, have been studied by Cu and Mo K-edge x-ray-absorption fine-structure spectroscopy. A direct evidence for the reduction of divalent Cu to monovalent is detected by Cu K-edge x-ray-absorption near-edge structure. The extended x-ray-absorption fine-structure confirms that the interatomic distances around Cu and Mo in the photoinduced phase are almost identical to those of the initial low-temperature phase. Experimental cross sections are reported for the Fe{sup 13+} coronal green line transition 3s{sup 2}3p {sup 2}P{sub 1} at {sub {approx}}{sub sol{approx}} at {sub 2}{sup o}-3s{sup 2}3p {sup 2}P{sub 3} at {sub {approx}}{sub sol{approx}} at {sub 2}{sup o} at {lambda}5303 A ring (2.338 eV). The center-of-mass interaction energies are in the range 1.7 eV (below threshold) through threshold, to 6.6 eV (2.9xthreshold). Data are compared with results of a 135-level Breit-Pauli R-matrix theory. Present experiment detects a strong maximum in the excitation cross section of magnitude 15x10{sup -16} cm{sup 2} at 2.6 eV.
