Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) catalyzes ester hydrolysis through nucleophilic attack of an active-site serine on the acyl carbon of the substrate, acetylcholine, leading to the formation of an acylenzyme intermediate, with hydrolysis resulting in the production of choline and acetic acid. The first half of the reverse reaction-AChE-catalyzed attack on acetate-was studied over a wide range in pH. Homogeneous enzyme was obtained after chromatography using the synthetic affinity resin 9-(5-carboxypentylamino)acridine. The pH-dependence of AChE-catalyzed acetylthiocholine hydrolysis and its inhibition by acetate implicated one, or possibly two, active site residues in deacylation with pK/sub a/ values of 6.7 and 5.0. Effects of strain-dependent surface stress on the adhesive contact of a rigid sphere to a compliant substrate

Recent experiments have reported that the surface stress of soft elastic solids can increase rapidly with surface strain. For example, when a small hard sphere in adhesive contact with a soft silicone gel is slowly retracted from its rest position, it was found that the retraction force versus displacement relation cannot be explained either by the Johnson–Kendall–Roberts (JKR) theory or a recent indentation theory based on an isotropic surface stress that is independent of surface strain. Carboxylic acids are sorbed from aqueous feedstocks at pHs close to or above the acids' pH.sub.a into a strongly basic organic liquid phase or onto a basic solid adsorbent or moderately basic ion exchange resin. the acids are freed from the sorbent phase by treating it with aqueous alkylamine or ammonia thus forming an alkylammonium or ammonium carobxylate which dewatered and decomposed to the desired carboxylic acid and the alkylamine or ammonia.
