Abstract

The aim of this introductory article is two-fold. First, we aim to offer a general introduction to the theme of Bose-Einstein condensates, and briefly discuss the evolution of a number of relevant research directions during the last two decades. Second, we introduce and present the articles that appear in this Special Volume of Romanian Reports in Physics celebrating the conclusion of the second decade since the experimental creation of Bose-Einstein condensation in ultracold gases of alkali-metal atoms.

Elementary excitations and universal interaction in Bose-Einstein condensates at large scattering lengths

We present a theoretical analysis of excitation modes in Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold alkali-metal gases for large scattering lengths, showing clear deviations from the Bogoliubov prediction as seen by Papp et al.[Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 135301 (2008)]. We construct the atom-atom interaction by deriving the T matrix of such systems from two coupled (open and closed) channels assuming that the Feshbach resonance dominates the latter. We calculate molecular bound-state energies as a function of the magnetic field and compare with available experiments. Dark-Bright Solitons in Inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein Condensates

We investigate dark-bright vector solitary wave solutions to the coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations which describe an inhomogeneous two-species Bose-Einstein condensate. While these structures are well known in nonlinear fiber optics, we show that spatial inhomogeneity strongly affects their motion, stability, and interaction, and that current technology suffices for their creation and control in ultracold trapped gases. The effect of controllably different interparticle scattering lengths is examined, and stability against three-dimensional deformations is considered.

Matter waves inside periodic potentials are well known from solid-state physics, where electrons interacting with a crystal lattice are considered. Atomic Bose-Einstein condensates inside light-induced periodic potentials (optical lattices) share many features with electrons in solids, but also with light waves in nonlinear materials and other nonlinear systems. Generally, atom-atom interactions in Bose-Einstein condensates lead to rich and interesting nonlinear effects. Vortex Coupler for Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates

A coherent coupler is proposed to spin a Bose-Einstein condensate composed of ultracold alkali atoms into a vortex state. The proposal is based on a Raman transition induced by two copropagating {sigma}{sup +} and {sigma}{sup {minus}} polarized Laguerre-Gaussian laser beams with different frequencies. We show that the transfer of angular momentum of photons to the condensed atoms through a Raman transition leads to a coherent coupling of the ground-state condensate to a rotating condensate in a vortex state.
