Electron temperature gradient (ETG) modes are suspected sources of anomalous electron thermal transport in magnetically confined plasmas as in tokamaks. Prior work in the Columbia Linear Machine (CLM) has been able to produce and identify slab ETG modes in a slab geometry [Wei et al., Phys. Plasmas 17, 042108 (2010)]. Now by modifying CLM to introduce curvature to the confining axial magnetic field, we have excited mixed slab-toroidal modes. Second stable regime of nonlocal mixed slab-toroidal anisotropic ion-temperature-gradient-driven mode

Nonlocal effects on the mixed slab-toroidal ion-temperature-gradient-driven (ITG) instability are investigated with analytical and numerical approaches. Although it is more complex than the local analysis, the nonlocal analysis also leads to the same conclusion that a second stable regime exists at large values of the perpendicular temperature gradient. Experimental study of a mixed slab and toroidal ion-temperature-gradient mode

The first study of the transition of the slab toward the toroidal branch of the ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) driven mode in the Columbia Linear Machine (CLM) [Plasma Phys. {bold 24}, 185 (1982)] is reported. This has been achieved by first exciting the slab ITG mode and gradually increasing the magnetic curvature by energizing a magnetic mirror coil. The magnetic curvature can then be adjusted either by moving the mirror coil axially (to change the mirror cell length) or by varying the mirror coil current (to change the mirror ratio). Experimental study of the transition from the slab to the toroidal branch of the ion temperature gradient mode

The transition from the slab to the toroidal branch of the ion temperature gradient (ITG) mode was studied by first exciting the slab (ITG) mode and gradually raising the magnetic curvature in the Columbia Linear Machine. Modest levels of magnetic curvature destablized and reduced the real frequency of the mode in accordance with the prediction from a simple theory. However, with further increase in mirror ratio and trapped particles, the observed mode amplitude decreased and the parallel wavelength greatly increased. This may be a hybrid ITG dissipative trapped electron mode.

Transition from toroidal to slab temperature gradient driven modes

In the local approximation the electrostatic dispersion relation for the (ion or electron) temperature gradient driven modes is solved retaining the full guiding-center resonance condition {omega}={ital k}{sub {parallel}}{ital v}{sub {parallel}}+{bold k}{center dot}{bold v}{sub {ital D}} ({ital v}{sup 2}{sub {perpendicular}},{ital v}{sup 2}{sub {parallel}}). Increase of the slab-to-toroidal ratio parameter {ital k}{sub {parallel}}{ital v}{sub {ital T}}/{ital k}{sub {perpendicular}}{ital v}{sub {ital D}} is shown to directly increase the threshold value of the temperature-to-density gradient parameter {eta}{sub {ital c}}. Therefore, the local anomalous heat flux has a strong dependence on the safety factor {ital q} when {ital k}{sub {parallel}}{similar to}1/{ital qR}.
