Title: Observation of top quark pairs produced in association with a vector boson in pp collisions at √(s) = 8 TeV

Abstract

Measurements of the cross sections for top quark pairs produced in association with a W or Z boson are presented, using 8 TeV pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb^-1, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. We found that final states are selected in which the associated W boson decays to a charged lepton and a neutrino or the Z boson decays to two charged leptons. Signal events are identified by matching reconstructed objects in the detector to specific final state particles from tt^-W or tt^-Z decays. The tt^-W cross section is measured to be 382⁺¹¹⁷ _-102 fb with a significance of 4.8 standard deviations from the background-only hypothesis. The tt^-Z cross section is measured to be 242⁺⁶⁵ _-55 fb with a significance of 6.4 standard deviations from the background-only hypothesis. These measurements are used to set bounds on five anomalous dimension-six operators that would affect the tt^-W and tt^-Z cross sections.

Evidence for $$WZ/WW\to \ell \nu$$ + Heavy Flavors Vector Boson Production in 7.5 fb$$^{-1}$$ of CDF Data

This contribution describes a search for the associated production of Standard Model vector bosons WZ where the W boson decays leptonically (W {yields} {ell}{nu}) and the Z boson decays to a heavy flavor quark pair (Z {yields} b{bar b}, c{bar c}). At least one identified ('tagged') heavy flavor jet in the final state is required. Given the small di-jet invariant mass separation between the W and the Z resonances, the production of WW events where one W decays leptonically and the second W decays into an heavy flavor jet (e.i. Measurement of the single top production cross section in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV

Thesis/Dissertation Tanasijczuk, Andres Jorge

This thesis describes a search for singly produced top quarks via an electroweak vertex in head-on proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy of √s = 1.96 TeV. The analysis uses a total of 2.3 fb^-1 of data collected with the D0 detector at Fermilab, corresponding to two different run periods of the Tevatron collider. Two channels contribute to single top quark production at the Tevatron, the s-channel and the t-channel. In the s-channel, a virtual W boson is produced from the aniquilation of a quark and an antiquark and a top and a bottom quarks are produced from the W decay. The top quark decays almost exclusively into a W boson and a bottom quark. Final states are considered in which the W boson decays leptonically into an electron or a muon plus a neutrino. Thus, at the detector level, the final state characterizing the s-channel contains one lepton, missing energy accounting for the neutrino, and two jets from the two bottom quarks. In the t-channel, the final state has an additional jet coming from a light quark. Clearly, a precise reconstruction of the events requires a precise measurement of the energy of the jets. A multivariate technique, Bayesian neural networks, is used to extract the single top signal from the overwhelming background still left after event selection. A Bayesian likelihood probability is then computed to measure the single top cross section. Evidence for WZ Production and a Measurement of the WZ Production Cross Section

This dissertation describes a test of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics by measuring the probability, or cross section, of simultaneously producing a W boson and a Z boson from proton-antiproton collisions. The SM predicts the cross section of WZ production to be 3.68 ± 0.25 pb. The SM and physics of WZ production are described in Chapter 2 of this dissertation. The 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy proton-antiproton collisions are provided by the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) Tevatron Collider. The W and Z particles are detected using the D0 detector, which is described in Chapter 3. The data were collected by the detector during 2002-2006 corresponding to 1 fb^-1 of p{bar p} collisions. This data set is described in Chapter 6. The measurement uses the trilepton (evee, μvee, evμμ, and μvμμ) decay channels, in which a W decays to a charged lepton plus a neutrino and a Z decays to a pair of charged leptons. A search for $$ t\overline{t} $$ resonances using lepton-plus-jets events in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s}=8 $$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for new particles that decay into top quark pairs is reported. The search is performed with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb^-1 of proton-proton collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=8s=8 TeV. The lepton-plus-jets final state is used, where the top pair decays to W⁺bW^-b¯¯W+bW-b¯, with one W boson decaying leptonically and the other hadronically. The invariant mass spectrum of top quark pairs is examined for local excesses or deficits that are inconsistent with the Standard Model predictions.
