We report on the observation of excited states in the neutron-deficient phosphorus isotopes ^26,27,28P via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy with both high-efficiency and high-resolution detector arrays. In ²⁶P, a previously-unobserved level has been identified at 244(3) keV, two new measurements of the astrophysically-important 3/2⁺ resonance in ²⁷P have been performed, gamma decays have been assigned to the proton-unbound levels at 2216 keV and 2483 keV in ²⁸P, and the gamma-ray lineshape method has been used to make the first determination of the lifetimes of the two lowest-lying excited states in 28P. Experimental study of the astrophysically important ${}^{23}{Na} (α, p) {}^{26}{Mg}$ and ${}^{23}{Na} (α, n) {}^{26}{Al}$ reactions

The ²³Na(α,p) ²⁶Mg and ²³Na(α,n) ²⁶Al reactions are important for our understanding of the ²⁶Al abundance in massive stars. The aim of this work is to report on a direct and simultaneous measurement of these astrophysically important reactions using an active target system. The reactions were investigated in inverse kinematics using ⁴He as the active target gas in the detector. We measured the excitation functions in the energy range of about 2 to 6 MeV in the center of mass. Excitation functions for shell-stabilized evaporation residues produced in 48 Ca -induced reactions with 154 Gd , 159 Tb , 162 Dy , and 165 Ho targets have been measured in experiments performed at the Cyclotron Institute at Texas A&M University. The examined energy range predominantly covers the 3 n and 4 n evaporation channels with higher cross sections measured for the 4 n products. The σ 4 n are nearly invariant within experimental uncertainty in reactions with 159 Tb , 162 Dy , and 165 Ho with the maxima at 12.6 ± 1.9, 12.6 ± 1.7, and 9.4 ± 1.3more »« less

In-Beam $γ$ -Ray Spectroscopy of ${}^{34, 36, 38}{Mg}$ : Merging the $N = 20$ and $N = 28$ Shell Quenching

Neutron-rich N = 22, 24, 26 magnesium isotopes were studied in this paper via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory following secondary fragmentation reactions on a carbon target at ≈ 200 MeV /nucleon. In the one- and two-proton removal channels from ³⁹Al and ⁴⁰Si beams, two distinct γ-ray transitions were observed in ³⁸Mg, while in the one-proton removal reaction from ³⁷Al a new transition was observed in addition to the known 2⁺₁ → 0 ⁺_g.s. decay.
