We review interaction effects in chaotic metallic nanoparticles. Their single‐particle Hamiltonian is described by the proper random‐matrix ensemble while the dominant interaction terms are invariants under a change of the single‐particle basis. In the absence of spin‐orbit scattering, the nontrivial invariants consist of a pairing interaction, which leads to superconductivity in the bulk, and a ferromagnetic exchange interaction. Spin‐orbit scattering breaks spin‐rotation invariance and when it is sufficiently strong, the only dominant nontrivial interaction is the pairing interaction. Influence of spin-orbit scattering on the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida effect in superconducting thin films

Spin-polarized tunneling was used to study exchange effects as a function of spin-orbit scattering rate at the surface of thin Al films, each covered with a submonolayer of Gd. The spin-orbit scattering rate was controlled by the deposition of a Pt layer on the side of the Al film opposite that covered with Gd. At sufficient Pt coverages, the Zeeman splitting of the conduction electrons is washed out, but the magnitude of the polarization is unchanged. Improvement in high magnetic field behavior of vanadium-gallium superconductors by enhancement of spin-orbit scattering. Progress report

Goal is to increase the critical magnetic field in V/sub 3/Ga, by adding high Z impurities. V/sub 3/Ga films 10 nm thick have been studied. A 6-nm Al over layer was found to optimize T/sub c/. 0.5 nm Ta overlayer also increased T/sub c/. There is zero field effect. Tunneling measurements on 10 nm V/sub 3/Ga show important Fermi-liquid effects. (DLC)
