We present a new method for generation of relativistic electron beams with current modulation on the nanometer scale and below. The current modulation is produced by diffracting relativistic electrons in single crystal Si, accelerating the diffracted beam and imaging the crystal structure, then transferring the image into the temporal dimension via emittance exchange. The modulation period can be tuned by adjusting electron optics after diffraction. This tunable longitudinal modulation can have a period as short as a few angstroms, enabling production of coherent hard x-rays from a source based on inverse Compton scattering with total accelerator length of approximately tenmore »« less

The Atomic Structural Dynamics of γ-Al₂O₃ Supported Ir–Pt Nanocluster Catalysts Prepared from a Bimetallic Molecular Precursor: A Study Using Aberration-Corrected Electron Microscopy and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

This study describes a prototypical, bimetallic heterogeneous catalyst: compositionally well-defined Ir–Pt nanoclusters with sizes in the range of 1–2 nm supported on γ-Al₂O₃. Deposition of the molecular bimetallic cluster [Ir₃Pt₃(μ-CO)₃(CO)₃(η-C₅Me₅)₃] on γ-Al₂O₃, and its subsequent reduction with hydrogen, provides highly dispersed supported bimetallic Ir–Pt nanoparticles. Using spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM) and theoretical modeling of synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements, our studies provide unambiguous structural assignments for this model catalytic system. The atomic resolution Cs-STEM images reveal strong and specific lattice-directed strains in the clusters that follow local bonding configurations of the γ-Al₂O₃ support. Aberration correction in photoemission microscopy and applications in photonics and plasmonics

We report on the design, assembly, operation and application of an aberration-corrected photoemission electron microscope. The instrument used novel hyperbolic mirror-correctors with two and three electrodes that allowed simultaneous correction of spherical and chromatic aberrations. A spatial resolution of 5.4nm was obtained with this instrument in 2009, and 4.7nm in subsequent years. New imaging methodology was introduced involving interferometric imaging of light diffraction. This methodology was applied in nano-photonics and in the characterization of surface-plasmon polaritons. Photonic crystals and waveguides, optical antennas and new plasmonic devices such as routers, localizers and filters were designed and demonstrated using the new capabilitiesmore » offered by the microscope.« less
