Many environmental factors have been independently associated with preterm birth (PTB). However, exposure is not isolated to a single environmental factor, but rather to many positive and negative factors that co-occur. Furthermore, the environmental quality index (EQI), a measure of cumulative environmental exposure across all US counties from 2000—2005, was used to investigate associations between ambient environment and PTB.

Highlights: • We describe the association between TCS and preterm births at ecological level. • We describe the association between TCS and low weight births at ecological level. • There was a negative correlation between TCS and the prevalence of preterm births. • Our data support greater implementation of smoke-free policies. To assess the correlation between tobacco control policies— particularly smoking bans in work and public places—and the prevalence of preterm births and low birth weight in the European countries.

Ovariectomy reduced the incidence of vaginal tumors after intravaginal application of 9,10-dimethyl-1,2benzanthracene (DMBA), and administration of oestrogen or of progesterone raised the incidence of tumors only slightly. Repeated whole-body exposures to x rays also lowered the rate of tumor incidence after painting and so to a lesser extent did repeated pelvic irradiation of virgin rats and the application of DMBA to an additional dorsal skin region.
