The absolute mass scale of neutrinos is an intriguing open question in contemporary physics. The as-yet-unknown mass of the lightest and, at the same time, most abundant massive elementary particle species bears fundamental relevance to theoretical particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. The most model-independent experimental approach consists of precision measurements of the kinematics of weak decays, notably tritium β decay. With the KATRIN experiment, this direct neutrino-mass measurement has entered the sub-eV domain, recently pushing the upper limit on the electron-based neutrino mass down to 0.8 eV (90% CL) on the basis of first-year data out of ongoing, multiyear operations.more »« less

It has been recently suggested that the vacuum magnetic dichroism observed by the PVLAS experiment could be explained by pair production of a new light, m{sub {epsilon}}{approx_equal}0.1 eV, millicharged, q{sub {epsilon}}{approx_equal}3x10{sup -6}e, fermions ({epsilon}). In addition, it has been pointed out that millicharged particles with q{sub {epsilon}} > or approx. 10{sup -9}e appear naturally in models based on the string theory. Resolving {theta}{sub 23} degeneracy by accelerator and reactor neutrino oscillation experiments

If the lepton mixing angle {theta}{sub 23} is not maximal, there arises a problem of ambiguity in determining {theta}{sub 23} due to the existence of two degenerate solutions, one in the first and the other in the second octant. We discuss an experimental strategy for resolving the {theta}{sub 23} octant degeneracy by combining reactor measurement of {theta}{sub 13} with accelerator {nu}{sub {mu}} disappearance and {nu}{sub e} appearance experiments. The robustness of the {theta}{sub 23} degeneracy and the difficulty in lifting it only by accelerator experiments with conventional {nu}{sub {mu}} (and {nu}{sub {mu}}) beams are demonstrated by analytical and numerical treatments.more »« less
