Quantum equivalence of noncommutative and Yang-Mills gauge theories in 2D and matrix theory

We construct noncommutative U(1) gauge theory on the fuzzy sphere S{sub N}{sup 2} as a unitary 2Nx2N matrix model. In the quantum theory the model is equivalent to a non-Abelian U(N) Yang-Mills theory on a two-dimensional lattice with two plaquettes. This equivalence holds in the 'fuzzy sphere' phase where we observe a 3rd order phase transition between weak-coupling and strong-coupling phases of the gauge theory. In the matrix phase we have a U(N) gauge theory on a single point.

Yang-Mills theory as Schroedinger quantum mechanics on the space of gauge-group orbits

Recent proposals to study Yang-Mills theory on the space of gauge-group orbits are reconsidered. In particular, it is shown that the right formal Hamiltonian is not given by -h/sup 2//2 times the Laplace-Beltrami operator plus the standard ''magnetic field'' potential, as was suggested, but has an additional potential term proportional to h/sup 2/ and is expressible in terms of the geometry not only of the space of gauge-group orbits but also of the orbits themselves as embedded in the space of gauge fields. Formal discussion of the continuum fields is substantiated by a rigorous consideration of lattice gauge theory.

Yang--Mills gauge theories and Baker--Johnson quantum electrodynamics

We show that the physical mass of a fermion in a symmetric asymptotically free non-Abelian vector gauge theory is dynamical in origin. We comment on the close analogy that exists between such a theory and the Baker--Johnson finite quantum electrodynamics. Comments are also made when there is spontaneous symmetry breaking. (AIP)

Quantum field theory about a Yang-Mills pseudoparticle. [0(5) covariant formalism, SU(2) preudoparticle solution, gauge ghost, small oscillations]

The quantum field theory built upon the SU(2) Yang-Mills pseudoparticle solution is studied in an O(5) covariant formalism. The gauge ghost and small oscillations of the Yang-Mills field problems are analyzed completely on the O(5) hypersphere, and it is shown that solutions of the various eigenvalue equations may be easily projected back into Euclidean space. Zero-frequency modes in the small oscillations are found, and their interpretation is given within the framework of the O(5,1) conformal group. (AIP)
