Expansion dynamics of a two-component quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate: Phase diagram, self-similar solutions, and dispersive shock waves

We investigate the expansion dynamics of a Bose–Einstein condensate that consists of two components and is initially confined in a quasi-one-dimensional trap. We classify the possible initial states of the two-component condensate by taking into account the nonuniformity of the distributions of its components and construct the corresponding phase diagram in the plane of nonlinear interaction constants. The differential equations that describe the condensate evolution are derived by assuming that the condensate density and velocity depend on the spatial coordinate quadratically and linearly, respectively, which reproduces the initial equilibrium distribution of the condensate in the trap in the Thomas–Fermi approximation.more »« less

We address the challenging proposition of using real experimental parameters in a three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulation of fast rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. We simulate recent experiments [V. Bretin, S. Stock, Y. Seurin, and J. Dalibard, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 050403 (2004); S. Stock, V. Bretin, S. Stock, F. Chevy, and J. Dalibard, Europhys. Effect of a two-dimensional obstacle on the dispersion of a heavier-than-air gas in an atmospheric boundary layer

The results of a combined numerical and experimental investigation of the effect of a two-dimensional obstacle on the dispersion of a heavier-than-air gas in an atmospheric boundary layer are presented. In the numerical analysis portion, the governing equations are developed and the numerical solution algorithm is discussed. In the experimental portion a rough well boundary layer, that simulated at atmospheric surface layer flow, was generated in a 21.3 m long wind tunnel having a cross-section of 1.18 m x 1.68 m at the test section. Universal correlations and coherence in quasi-two-dimensional trapped Bose gases

We study the quasi-two-dimensional Bose gas in harmonic traps at temperatures above the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, where the gas is in the normal phase. We show that mean-field theory takes into account the dominant interaction effects for experimentally relevant trap geometries. Comparing with quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we quantify the onset of the fluctuation regime, where correlations beyond mean-field become important.
