Explicit structure-preserving geometric particle-in-cell (PIC) algorithm in curvilinear orthogonal coordinate systems is developed. The work reported represents a further development of the structure-preserving geometric PIC algorithm achieving the goal of practical applications in magnetic fusion research. The algorithm is constructed by discretizing the field theory for the system of charged particles and electromagnetic field using Whitney forms, discrete exterior calculus, and explicit non-canonical symplectic integration. In addition to the truncated infinitely dimensional symplectic structure, the algorithm preserves exactly many important physical symmetries and conservation laws, such as local energy conservation, gauge symmetry and the corresponding local charge conservation. A strategy for a general search for new phenomena using data-derived signal regions and its application within the ATLAS experiment

This paper describes a strategy for a general search used by the ATLAS Collaboration to find potential indications of new physics. Events are classified according to their final state into many event classes. For each event class an automated search algorithm tests whether the data are compatible with the Monte Carlo simulated expectation in several distributions sensitive to the effects of new physics. The significance of a deviation is quantified using pseudo-experiments. Quantum counting algorithm and its application in mesoscopic physics

We discuss a quantum counting algorithm which transforms a physical particle-number state (and superpositions thereof) into a binary number. The algorithm involves two quantum Fourier transformations. One transformation is in physical space, where a stream of n<N=2{sup K} (charged) particles is coupled to K qubits, rotating their states by prescribed angles. The second transformation is within the Hilbert space of qubits and serves to read out the particle number in a binary form. An algorithm is presented for solving a block-tridiagonal, linear matrix equation containing a singular submatrix whose inverse cannot be obtained. In applying the algorithm to distillation calculations, if the temperature of a specified plate is given, the residual function of the plate must be replaced with another residual function, producing a singular Jacobian submatrix with a zero row; if the feed enthalpy is unknown, a variable, viz., the vapor flow rate at the top of the column, must be replaced with the enthalpy of the feed, producing a singular Jacobian submatrix with a zero column.
