Modeling high-order plasmon resonances of a U-shaped nanowire used to build a negative-index metamaterial

We apply the concept of slow surface-plasmon polariton standing-wave resonances to model the plasmon resonances which exist on split-ring resonators (U-shaped nanowires) forming the unit cell of a metamaterial at infrared frequencies. We compare the expected resonances predicted by the model with full electrodynamic three-dimensional simulations of the U-shaped nanowires for varying geometrical parameters and find a reasonably good agreement. We also consider how far-field dipolar coupling between unit-cells and near-field coupling between the U-shaped nanowire's arms should be taken into account. Low-loss negative index metamaterials for X, Ku, and K microwave bands

Low-loss, negative-index of refraction metamaterials were designed and tested for X, Ku, and K microwave frequency bands. An S-shaped, split-ring resonator was used as a unit cell to design homogeneous slabs of negative-index metamaterials. Then, the slabs of metamaterials were cut unto prisms to measure experimentally the negative index of refraction of a plane electromagnetic wave. Loss compensated negative index material at optical wavelengths

We present a computational approach, allowing for a self-consistent treatment of three-dimensional (3D) fishnet metamaterial operating at 710 nm wavelength coupled to a gain material incorporated into the nanostructure. We show numerically that loss-free negative index material is achievable by incorporating gain material inside the fishnet structure. The effective gain coefficient of the combined fishnet-gain system is much larger than its bulk counterpart and the figure-of-merit (FOM = | Re(n)/Im(n) |) increases dramatically with gain. Transmission, reflection, and absorption data, as well as the retrieved effective parameters, are presented for the fishnet structure with and without gain.

Switchable zero-index metamaterials by loading positive-intrinsic-negative diodes

We propose switchable zero-index metamaterials (ZIMs) implemented by split ring resonators (SRRs) loaded with positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) diode switching elements. We demonstrate that ZIMs can be achieved at around 10 GHz when the PIN diode is switched off. When the PIN diode is switched on, however, the designed metamaterials have impedance matching to the free space, which is useful to reduce the reflections at the interface of two media. The switchable ZIMs are suitable for a wide variety of applications like the beam forming and directive radiation. Experimental results validate the switching ability of the proposed ZIMs.

Motivated by the realization of the Dirac point (DP) with a double-cone structure for optical field in the negative-zero-positive index metamaterial (NZPIM), the reflection, transmission, and Goos-Haenchen (GH) shifts inside the NZPIM slab are investigated. Due to the linear Dirac dispersion, the transmission as the function of the frequency has a gap, thus, the corresponding reflection has a frequency or wavelength window for the perfect reflection, which is similar to the Bragg reflection in the one-dimensional photonic crystals.
