Anomalous Behavior of Ru for Catalytic Oxidation: A Theoretical Study of the Catalytic Reaction CO+(1)/(2)O{sub 2}{r_arrow}CO{sub 2}

Recent experiments revealed an anomalous dependence of carbon monoxide oxidation at Ru(0001) on oxygen pressure and a particularly high reaction rate. Below we report density functional theory calculations of the energetics and reaction pathways of the speculated mechanism. We will show that the exceptionally high rate is actuated by a weakly but nevertheless well bound (1{times}1)-oxygen adsorbate layer. Furthermore, it is found that reactions via scattering of {ital gas-phase} CO at the oxygen covered surface may play an important role. Selectivity change in CO hydrogenation by oxidation-reduction treatment of Ru/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/: selectivity versus morphology of Ru

Effects of oxidation-reduction treatment on the microstructure of Ru particles and catalytic activity and selectivity of Ru/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ for CO hydrogenation were investigated. The Ru/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts were prepared from Ru/sub 3/(CO)/sub 12/ and RuCl/sub 3/. H/sub 2/ absorption, TEM, XRD, and EXAFS studies showed that, after reduction, Ru prepared from Ru/sub 3/(CO)/sub 12/ consisted of small particles (10 A), but when prepared from RuCl/sub 3/, they consisted of aggregates of small particles. Probing the transition state region in catalytic CO oxidation on Ru

Femtosecond x-ray laser pulses are used to probe the CO oxidation reaction on ruthenium (Ru) initiated by an optical laser pulse. On a time scale of a few hundred femtoseconds, the optical laser pulse excites motions of CO and O on the surface, allowing the reactants to collide, and, with a transient close to a picosecond (ps), new electronic states appear in the O K-edge x-ray absorption spectrum.
