K-shell photoabsorption cross sections for the isonuclear C I-C IV ions have been computed using the R-matrix method. Above the K-shell threshold, the present results are in good agreement with the independent-particle results of Reilman and Manson. Below threshold, we also compute the strong 1s {yields} np absorption resonances with the inclusion of important spectator Auger broadening effects. For the lowest 1s {yields} 2p, 3p resonances, comparisons to available C II, C III, and C IV experimental results show good agreement in general for the resonance strengths and positions. Electron-impact ionization and recombination of M-shell atomic ions in the argon isonuclear sequence

Electron-impact ionization and recombination cross sections and rate coefficients are calculated for M-shell Ar atomic ions using a configuration-average distorted-wave method. The electron-impact ionization calculations are for all atomic ions in the Ar isonuclear sequence. Ionization contributions include both direct ionization and excitation-autoionization processes. Good agreement is found between theory and experimental crossed-beam measurements for moderately charged ion stages. Comparisons are made with previous theoretical calculations where possible. We also generate rate coefficients for neutral argon ionization, based on recent R-matrix with pseudostates calculations. Electron-impact ionization cross sections for all atomic ions in the W isonuclear sequence are calculated using a variety of theoretical methods. For the direct ionization process, a semirelativistic configuration-average distorted-wave method is used for low to moderately charged ions, while a fully relativistic subconfiguration-average distorted-wave method is used for highly charged ions. Theoretical values of electric and magnetic susceptibilities (..cap alpha../sub 1/, ..cap alpha../sub 2/, chi/sub 1/) and shielding factors (..gamma../sub 1/, ..gamma../sub 2/, sigma) calculated in the relativistic random-phase approximation are presented in tabular form for ions with closed 1s, 2p, 3p, 3d, 4p, 4d, and 5p shells. The table includes all ions in these sequences with nuclear charge up to Z = 56 and a representation selection of ions with 56< or =Z< or =92.
