Here, we report the crystal field levels of several newly discovered rare-earth kagome compounds: Nd₃Sb₃Mg₂O₁₄, Nd₃Sb₃Zn₂O₁₄, and Pr₃Sb₃Mg₂O₁₄. We determine the crystal electric field (CEF) Hamiltonian by fitting to neutron scattering data using a point charge Hamiltonian as an intermediate fitting step. The fitted Hamiltonians accurately reproduce bulk susceptibility measurements, and the results indicate easy-axis ground-state doublets for Nd₃Sb₃Mg₂O₁₄ and Nd₃Sb₃Zn₂O₁₄ and a singlet ground state for Pr₃Sb₃Mg₂O₁₄. These results provide the groundwork for future investigations of these compounds and a template for CEF analysis of other low-symmetry materials.

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in multilayer thin films promotes the development of spintronic and magnonic research fields. The origin of the PMA deserves a thorough investigation since it contains rich physics related to multiple factors in the heterostructure system. In this report, we study the origin of PMA in La_2/3Sr_1/3 Mn O₃ (LSMO) thin films sandwiched by La_1-xSr_xCoO_3-δ (LSCO) layers grown on SrTiO₃ substrate, using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. Our findings indicate that the lattice and electronic structures of LSMO can be modified through the inhomogeneous strains induced by nanodomains in LSCO layers. Magnetic anisotropy in single-crystal high-entropy perovskite oxide $La (C r_{0.2} M n_{0.2} F e_{0.2} C o_{0.2} N i_{0.2}) O_{3}$ films

Configurational disorder can have a dominating role in the formation of macroscopic functional responses in strongly correlated materials. In this work, we use entropy-stabilization synthesis to create single-crystal epitaxial ABO₃ perovskite thin films with equal atomic concentration of $3d$ transition-metal cations on the B-site sublattice. X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy of La(Cr_0.2Mn_0.2Fe_0.2Co_0.2Ni_0.2)O₃ (L5BO) films demonstrate excellent crystallinity, smooth film surfaces, and uniform mixing of the $3d$ transition-metal cations throughout the B-site sublattice. The magnetic properties are strongly dependent on substrate-induced lattice anisotropy and suggest the presence of long-range magnetic order in these exceptionally disordered materials.more »« less
