We present ab initio calculations of the temperature-dependent exchange of energy between a classical charged point-particle and the phonons of a crystalline material. The phonons, which are computed using density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) methods, interact with the mov- ing particle via the Coulomb interaction between the density induced in the material by phonon excitation and the charge of the classical particle. Energy relaxation rates are computed using time- dependent perturbation theory. The method, which is applicable wherever DFPT is, is illustrated with results for CsI, an important scintillator whose performance is affected by electron thermal- ization. We discuss themore »« less

Electron-phonon relaxation rate in single-crystal lanthanum cuprate

We report the results of phonon relaxation processes obtained from picosecond transient thermoreflectance measurements of single-crystal La/sub 2/CuO/sub 4+/ital y// (/ital y//similar to/0.06). Nonequilibrium heating was found to occur on a picosecond time scale. The time scale of the nonequilibrium heating is a sensitive measurement of the modest electron-phonon interaction (/lambda//le/0.1) in the nonsuperconducting La/sub 2/CuO/sub 4+/ital y//.

Bottlenecks to intramolecular energy transfer and the calculation of relaxation rates

A recently developed theory of MacKay, Meiss, and Percival (Physica D 13, 55 (1984)) and Bensimon and Kadanoff (Physica D 13, 82 (1984)) is applied to the intramolecular relaxation of highly excited, collinear OCS. This theory, which was originally developed to understand the long time relaxation of mappings, possesses many of the features of statistical theories of reactions. Bottlenecks, dividing surfaces, and transition states are all part of the theory, which we employ here to describe the relaxation dynamics of collinear OCS.
