Measurement of the Generalized Polarizabilities of the Proton in Virtual Compton Scattering at $Q^{2} = 0.92$ and $1.76 {G e V}^{2}$

We report a Virtual Compton Scattering study of the proton at low CM energies. We have determined the structure functions P{sub LL} - P{sub TT}/{epsilon} and P{sub LT}, and the electric and magnetic Generalized Polarizabilities (GPs) {alpha}{sub E}(Q{sup 2}) and {beta}{sub M}(Q{sup 2}) at momentum transfer Q{sup 2} = 0.92 and 1.76 GeV{sup 2}. The electric GP shows a strong fall-off with Q{sup 2}, and its global behavior does not follow a simple dipole form. This study reports new exclusive cross sections for ep→e'π⁺π^–p' using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. These results are presented for the first time at photon virtualities 2.0 GeV² < Q² < 5.0 GeV² in the center-of-mass energy range 1.4 GeV < W < 2.0 GeV, which covers a large part of the nucleon resonance region. Using a model developed for the phenomenological analysis of electroproduction data, we see strong indications that the relative contributions from the resonant cross sections at W < 1.74 GeV increase with Q².
