The study of the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the 2+1 dimensional rotating draining bathtub acoustic black hole, the closest analogue found so far to the Kerr black hole, is performed. Both the real and imaginary parts of the quasinormal (QN) frequencies as a function of the rotation parameter B are found through a full nonlinear numerical analysis. Since there is no change in sign in the imaginary part of the frequency as B is increased we conclude that the 2+1 dimensional rotating draining bathtub acoustic black hole is stable against small perturbations.

Analytic study of rotating black-hole quasinormal modes

A Bohr-Sommerfeld equation is derived for the highly damped quasinormal mode frequencies {omega}(n>>1) of rotating black holes. It may be written as 2C(p{sub r}+ip{sub 0})dr=(n+1/2)h, where p{sub r} is the canonical momentum conjugate to the radial coordinate r along a null geodesic of energy ({Dirac_h}/2{pi}){omega} and angular momentum ({Dirac_h}/2{pi})m, p{sub 0}=O({omega}{sup 0}), and the contour C connects two complex turning points of p{sub r}. The solutions are {omega}(n)=-m{omega}-circumflex-i({phi}-circumflex+n{delta}-circumflex), where ({omega}-circumflex,{delta}-circumflex)>0 are functions of the black-hole parameters alone. Some physical implications are discussed.

New approach to the study of quasinormal modes of rotating stars

We propose a new method to study the quasinormal modes of rotating relativistic stars. Oscillations are treated as perturbations in the frequency domain of the stationary, axisymmetric background describing a rotating star. The perturbed quantities are expanded in circular harmonics, and the resulting 2D equations they satisfy are integrated using spectral methods in the (r,{theta}) plane. The asymptotic conditions at infinity, needed to find the mode frequencies, are implemented by generalizing the standing wave boundary condition commonly used in the nonrotating case. As a test, the method is applied to find the quasinormal mode frequencies of a slowly rotating star.

Quasinormal modes, scattering, and Hawking radiation of Kerr-Newman black holes in a magnetic field

We perform a comprehensive analysis of the spectrum of proper oscillations (quasinormal modes), transmission/reflection coefficients, and Hawking radiation for a massive charged scalar field in the background of the Kerr-Newman black hole immersed in an asymptotically homogeneous magnetic field. There are two main effects: the Zeeman shift of the particle energy in the magnetic field and the difference of values of an electromagnetic potential between the horizon and infinity, i.e. the Faraday induction.
