Strain engineering of epitaxial transition metal oxide heterostructures offers an intriguing opportunity to control electronic structures by modifying the interplay between spin, charge, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom. Here, we demonstrate that the electronic structure, magnetic and transport properties of La_0.9Ba_0.1MnO₃ thin films can be effectively controlled by epitaxial strain. Spectroscopic studies and first-principles calculations reveal that the orbital occupancy in Mn eg orbitals can be switched from the d_3z²-r² orbital to the d_x²-y² orbital by varying the strain from compressive to tensile. Electronic and magnetic properties of manganite thin films with different compositions and its correlation with transport properties: An X-ray resonant magnetic scattering study

Here, we present x-ray resonant magnetic dichroism and x-ray resonant magnetic scattering measurements of the temperature dependence of magnetism in Pr-doped La-Ca-Mn-O films grown on (110) NdGaO3 substrates. We observed thermal hysteresis of the ferromagnetism in one film that also showed large thermal hysteresis of ~18K in transport measurements. While in a second film of a different nominal chemistry, which showed very small thermal hysteresis ~3K in transport measurements, no thermal hysteresis of the ferromagnetism was observed. Strain controlled systematic variation of metal-insulator transition in epitaxial NdNiO{sub 3} thin films

We report here the strain dependent structural and electrical transport properties of epitaxial NdNiO{sub 3} thin films. Pulsed laser deposition technique was used to grow the NdNiO{sub 3} thin films on c-axis oriented SrTiO{sub 3} single crystals. Deposited films were irradiated using 200 MeV Ag{sup 15+} ion beam at the varying fluence (1 Multiplication-Sign 10{sup 11}, 5 Multiplication-Sign 10{sup 11}, and 1 Multiplication-Sign 10{sup 12} ions/cm{sup 2}). X-ray diffraction studies confirm the epitaxial growth of the deposited films, which is maintained even up to the highest fluence.
