Zeeman-limited superconductivity in crystalline Al films

We report the evolution of the Zeeman-mediated superconducting phase diagram (PD) in ultrathin crystalline Al films. Parallel critical field measurements, down to 50 mK, were made across the superconducting tricritical point of films ranging in thickness from 7 to 30 ML. The resulting phase boundaries were compared with the quasiclassical theory of a Zeeman-mediated transition between a homogeneous BCS condensate and a spin-polarized Fermi liquid. Films thicker than ~ 20 ML showed good agreement with theory, but thinner films exhibited an anomalous PD that cannot be reconciled within a homogeneous BCS framework.

The noncentrosymmetric superconductor (NCS) AuBe is investigated using a variety of thermodynamic and resistive probes in magnetic fields of up to 65 T and temperatures down to 0.3 K. Despite the polycrystalline nature of the samples, the observation of a complex series of de Haas–van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations has allowed the calculated band structure for AuBe to be validated. This permits a variety of BCS parameters describing the superconductivity to be estimated, despite the complexity of the measured Fermi surface. Zeeman effect as an asymmetric top

The quantum behavior of a hydrogen atom (with {ital m}=0) in a uniform magnetic field is mapped onto an asymmetric top. This mapping, in conjunction with the idea of a rotational energy surface, provides a physical interpretation for the observed electronic structure and quantum numbers, and gives an explanation for the localization of Rydberg states in a magnetic field.

Exact Phase Diagram for an Asymmetric Avalanche Process

The Bethe ansatz method and an iterative procedure based on detailed balance are used to obtain exact results for an asymmetric avalanche process on a ring. The average velocity of particle flow, v, is derived as a function of the toppling probabilities and the density of particles, {rho}. As {rho} increases, the system shows a transition from intermittent to continuous flow, and v diverges at a critical point {rho}{sub c} with exponent {alpha}. The exact phase diagram of the transition is obtained and {alpha} is found to depend on the toppling rules.
