Absorption of linearly polarized electromagnetic radiation by a two-dimensional electron gas in a lateral-superlattice structure subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field is calculated analytically and numerically for the first time, taking into account Rashba's spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting. Calculations are carried out for semiconductor heterostructures characterized by weak and sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling (AlGaAs/GaAs and GaAs/InGaAs, respectively). The nature of the new effect related to intense magnetoabsorption of electromagnetic radiation in the submillimeter range by a two-dimensional electron gas in a superlattice with strong spin-orbit coupling is analyzed. Intense terahertz laser fields on a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

The spin-dependent density of states and the density of spin polarization of an InAs-based two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling under an intense terahertz laser field are investigated by utilizing the Floquet states to solve the time-dependent Schroedinger equation. It is found that both densities are strongly affected by the terahertz laser field. Especially a terahertz magnetic moment perpendicular to the external terahertz laser field in the electron gas is induced. This effect can be used to convert terahertz electric signals into terahertz magnetic ones efficiently.

Superfluidity and collective modes in Rashba spin–orbit coupled Fermi gases

We present a theoretical study of the superfluidity and the corresponding collective modes in two-component atomic Fermi gases with s-wave attraction and synthetic Rashba spin–orbit coupling. The general effective action for the collective modes is derived from the functional path integral formalism. By tuning the spin–orbit coupling from weak to strong, the system undergoes a crossover from an ordinary BCS/BEC superfluid to a Bose–Einstein condensate of rashbons. We show that the properties of the superfluid density and the Anderson–Bogoliubov mode manifest this crossover. The discovery of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) at oxide interfaces—involving electrons in narrow d-bands—has broken new ground, enabling the access to correlated states that are unreachable in conventional semiconductors based on s- and p- electrons. There is a growing consensus that emerging properties at these novel quantum wells—such as 2D superconductivity and magnetism --are intimately connected to specific orbital symmetries in the 2DEG sub-band structure.
