Constraints on Ultrahigh-Energy Cosmic-Ray Sources from a Search for Neutrinos above 10 PeV with IceCube

In this study, we report constraints on the sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) above 10⁹ GeV, based on an analysis of seven years of IceCube data. This analysis efficiently selects very high energy neutrino-induced events which have deposited energies from 5 X 10⁵ GeV to above 10¹¹ GeV. Two neutrino-induced events with an estimated deposited energy of (2.6±0.3)×10⁶ GeV, the highest neutrino energies observed so far, and (7.7±2.0)×10⁵ GeV were detected. The atmospheric background-only hypothesis of detecting these events is rejected at 3.6σ. The hypothesis that the observed events are of cosmogenic origin is also rejected at > 99% CL because of the limited deposited energy and the non-observation of events at higher energy, while their observation is consistent with an astrophysical origin. Limits on Models of the Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays Based on Topological Defects

Using the propagation of ultrahigh energy nucleons, photons, and electrons in the universal radiation backgrounds, we obtain limits on the luminosity of topological defect scenarios for the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays. The limits are set as function of the mass of the {ital X} particles emitted by the cosmic strings or other defects, the cosmological evolution of the topological defects, and the strength of the extragalactic magnetic fields. Angular correlation of cosmic neutrinos with ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays and implications for their sources

Cosmic neutrino events detected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory with energy 0∼> 3 TeV have poor angular resolutions to reveal their origin. Ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), with better angular resolutions at 0>6 EeV energies, can be used to check if the same astrophysical sources are responsible for producing both neutrinos and UHECRs. We test this hypothesis, with statistical methods which emphasize invariant quantities, by using data from the Pierre Auger Observatory, Telescope Array and past cosmic-ray experiments. The energy at which cosmic rays from extra-galactic sources begin to dominate over those from galactic sources is an important open question in astroparticle physics. A natural candidate is the energy at the 'ankle' in the approximately power-law energy spectrum which is indicative of a crossover from a falling galactic component to a flatter extra-galactic component. The transition can occur without such flattening but this requires some degree of conspiracy of the spectral shapes and normalizations of the two components. Ultrahigh-energy neutrino emission from cosmic ray sources

It is shown that sources of cosmic rays may emit ultrahigh-energy (E/sub ..nu../>10/sup 2/ GeV) neutrinos at levels detectable by DUMAND, depending on how much target material is near the source. In particular, if cosmic ray sources are in dense clouds, they can be discrete neutrino sources. The time dependence of any positive signal could provide information about the acceleration mechanism.
