Extracting halo independent information from dark matter electron scattering data

Direct detection experiments and the interpretation of their results are sensitive to the velocity structure of the dark matter in our galactic halo. Here we extend the formalism that deals with such astrophysics-driven uncertainties, originally introduced in the context of dark-matter-nuclear scattering, to include dark-matter-electron scattering interactions. Using mock data, we demonstrate that the ability to determine the correct dark matter mass and velocity distribution is depleted for recoil spectra which only populate a few low-lying bins, such as models involving a light mediator. Halo-independent methods for inelastic dark matter scattering

We present halo-independent methods to analyze the results of dark matter direct detection experiments assuming inelastic scattering. We focus on the annual modulation signal reported by DAMA/LIBRA and present three different halo-independent tests. First, we compare it to the upper limit on the unmodulated rate from XENON100 using (a) the trivial requirement that the amplitude of the annual modulation has to be smaller than the bound on the unmodulated rate, and (b) a bound on the annual modulation amplitude based on an expansion in the Earth's velocity. Dark matter at colliders: A model-independent approach

Assuming that cosmological dark matter consists of weakly interacting massive particles, we use the recent precise measurement of cosmological parameters to predict the guaranteed rates of production of such particles in association with photons at electron-positron colliders. Our approach is based on general physical principles such as detailed balancing and soft/collinear factorization. It leads to predictions that are valid across a broad range of models containing WIMPs, including supersymmetry, universal extra dimensions, and many others. We also discuss the discovery prospects for the predicted experimental signatures.

Dependence of dark matter - electron scattering on the galactic dark matter velocity distribution

The rate of dark matter-electron scattering depends on the underlying velocity distribution of the dark matter halo. Importantly, dark matter-electron scattering is particularly sensitive to the high-velocity tail, which differs significantly amongst the various dark matter halo models. In this work, we summarize the leading halo models and discuss the various parameters which enter them. We recommend updated values for these parameters based on recent studies and measurements. Furthermore, we quantify the dependence of the dark matter-electron scattering rate on the choice of halo model and parameters, and demonstrate how these choices propagate to the predicted cross-section limits.
