Thermolysis of (C[sub 5]Me[sub 5])Rh(PMe[sub 3])(Ph)H (1) in neat fluorobenzene, o-difluorobenzene, p-difluorobenzene, or 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene results in the formation of the new aryl hydride complexes (C[sub 5]Me[sub 5])Rh(PMe[sub 3])(aryl[sub F])H (aryl[sub F] = 2-C[sub 6]H[sub 4]F, 2,3-C[sub 6]H[sub 3]F[sub 2], 2,5-C[sub 6]H[sub 3]F[sub 2], or 2,4,6-C[sub 6]H[sub 2]F[sub 3]). Short term thermolysis of 1 in m-difluorobenzene produces a kinetic mixture of products resulting from activation of all possible C-H bond positions. Irradiation of the carbodiimide complex [HB(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)[sub 3]]Rh(CNR)(PhN[double bond]C[double bond]NR) (R = neopentyl) in benzene, toluene, mesitylene, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, propane, or pentane solvent leads to both the clean elimination of the carbodiimide ligand and the formation of the C-H oxidative addition product [HB(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)[sub 3]]Rh(CNR)(R[prime])H. These products have been isolated as their chloride derivatives. Methane can be activated by exchange with the cyclohexyl derivative. The complexes (C{sub 5}Me{sub 5})Rh(PMe{sub 3})(aryl)H (aryl = C{sub 6}H{sub 5}, 2,6-C{sub 6}H{sub 3}Me{sub 2}) are found to react with several electrophiles. Treatment with CS{sub 2} gives two products, the major species resulting from the elimination of benzene and formation of (C{sub 5}Me{sub 5})Rh(PMe{sub 3})(CS{sub 2}). The minor product is formed by insertion into the Rh-H bond to give (C{sub 5}Me{sub 5})Rh(PMe{sub 3})(Ph)(SCH=S). Reaction of the aryl hydride complex with PhNCS gives only the insertion product (C{sub 5}Me{sub 5})Rh(PMe{sub 3})(Ph)(SCH=NPh). Reactions of electrophiles with a metal-hydride complex. Reduction of CS{sub 2} by Cp*Rh(PMe{sub 3})H{sub 2} to produce the bridging methanedithiolate complex Cp*Rh(PMe{sub 3})(SCH{sub 2}S)

The title complex Cp*Rh(PMe{sub 3})(SCH{sub 2}S) (3) was prepared by the reaction of Cp*Rh(PMe{sub 3})H{sub 2} with Cs{sub 2}. No reaction was observed with CO{sub 2} at ambient or elevated temperatures and pressures. Reaction with OCS gave the known compounds Cp*Rh(PMe{sub 3})(CO) (4) and Cp*Rh(CO){sub 2} (5) plus S{double_bond}PMe{sub 3}. Kinetic measurements show a first-order dependence on [CS{sub 2}] and a small dependence on solvent polarity. Activation parameters for the reaction with CS{sub 2} were also measured, consistent with an associative transition state.
