Interplay of threshold resummation and hadron mass corrections in deep inelastic processes

Title: Interplay of threshold resummation and hadron mass corrections in deep inelastic processes

Abstract

We discuss hadron mass corrections and threshold resummation for deep-inelastic scattering lN-->l'X and semi-inclusive annihilation e⁺e^- → hX processes, and provide a prescription how to consistently combine these two corrections respecting all kinematic thresholds. We find an interesting interplay between threshold resummation and target mass corrections for deep-inelastic scattering at large values of Bjorken x_B. In semi-inclusive annihilation, on the contrary, the two considered corrections are relevant in different kinematic regions and do not affect each other. A detailed analysis is nonetheless of interest in the light of recent high precision data from BaBar and Belle on pion and kaon production, with which we compare our calculations. For both deep inelastic scattering and single inclusive annihilation, the size of the combined corrections compared to the precision of world data is shown to be large. Therefore, we conclude that these theoretical corrections are relevant for global QCD fits in order to extract precise parton distributions at large Bjorken x_B, and fragmentation functions over the whole kinematic range.

We show that certain general properties of threshold and joint resummations in Drell-Yan cross sections hold as well for their crossed analogs in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and double-inclusive leptonic annihilation. We show that all plus-distribution corrections near threshold have the same structure, and are determined to all logarithmic order by two anomalous dimensions, one of which is a generalization of the D-term previously derived in Drell-Yan. We also discuss the possibility of universality in power corrections implied by the resummation.

QT-RESUMMATION FOR POLARIZED SEMI-INCLUSIVE DEEP INELASTIC SCATTERING.

We study the transverse-momentum distribution of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. We consider cross sections for various combinations of the polarizations of the initial lepton and nucleon or the produced hadron, for which we perform the resummation of large double-logarithmic perturbative corrections arising at small transverse momentum. We present phenomenological results for the process ep {yields} e{pi}X for the typical kinematics in the COMPASS experiment. We discuss the impact of the perturbative resummation and of estimated non-perturbative contributions on the corresponding cross sections and their spin asymmetry.

Factorization of boosted multijet processes for threshold resummation

Explicit applications of factorization theorems for processes at hadron colliders near the hadronic end point have largely focused on simple final states with either no jets (e.g., Drell-Yan) or one inclusive jet (e.g., deep-inelastic scattering and prompt photon production). Factorization for the former type of process gives rise to a soft function that depends on timelike momenta, whereas the soft function for the latter type depends on null momenta. ECCE sensitivity studies for single hadron transverse single spin asymmetry measurements

We performed feasibility studies for various single transverse spin measurements that are related to the Sivers effect, transversity and the tensor charge, and the Collins fragmentation function. The processes studied include semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The data were obtained in pythia6 and geant4 simulated e+p collisions at 18 GeV on 275 GeV, 18 on 100, 10 on 100, and 5 on 41 that use the ECCE detector configuration. Factorization and Momentum-Space Resummation in Deep-Inelastic Scattering

Renormalization-group methods in soft-collinear effective theory are used to perform the resummation of large perturbative logarithms for deep-inelastic scattering in the threshold region x {yields} 1. The factorization theorem for the structure function F{sub 2}(x,Q{sup 2}) for x {yields} 1 is rederived in the effective theory, whereby contributions from the hard scale Q{sup 2} and the jet scale Q{sup 2}(1 - x) are encoded in Wilson coefficients of effective-theory operators. Resummation is achieved by solving the evolution equations for these operators.
