The bulk-to-surface Sr segregation can seriously compromise the stability of oxygen electrocatalysis in La_1-xSr_xCoO_3-δ and limit its practical applications such as in solid oxide fuel cells. In this work, we show via in situ ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) that the surface Sr-segregation is a kinetically fast process and the equilibrium surface Sr-concentration follows Arrhenius law from 250 to 520 °C at a fixed p_O₂ = 1 × 10^-3 atm. Furthermore, we also show that application of a nanoscaled, atomic layer deposition (ALD) derived ZrO₂ overcoat can effectively suppress the Sr-segregation by reducing the surface concentration of oxygen vacancies.more »« less

La_0.6Sr_0.4Co_0.2Fe_0.8O_3-δ-Ce_0.9Gd_0.1O_2-δ(LSCF-GDC) composite oxygen electrodes have been widely used in intermediate temperature (<700 °C) solid oxide cells, with composite usually providing better electrochemical performance than single-phase LSCF. However, LSCF-based electrodes are often observed to degrade over time due to Sr segregation. Here we present an impedance spectroscopy study comparing the degradation behaviors of LSCF-GDC and Sm_0.5Sr_0.5CoO_3-δ(SSC) infiltrated LSCF-GDC electrodes. The LSCF-GDC polarization resistance increases by ~5 times over ~1000 h at 650 °C. In contrast, the SSC-infiltrated electrode shows similar initial polarization resistance but much more stable performance. Information from ex situ characterization can fall short in describing complex materials systems simultaneously exposed to multiple external stimuli. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to probe the local atomistic and electronic structure of specific elements in a La_0.6Sr_0.4Co_0.2Fe_0.8O_3-δ (LSCF) thin film cathode exposed to air contaminated with H₂O and CO₂ under operating conditions. While impedance spectroscopy showed that the polarization resistance of the LSCF cathode increased upon exposure to both contaminants at 750°C, XAS near-edge and extended fine structure showed that the degree of oxidation for Fe and Co decreases with increasing temperature. Abstract Topotactic phase transitions induced by changes in the oxygen vacancy concentration can largely alter the physical properties of complex oxides, including electronic and magnetic phases, while maintaining the structural integrity of the crystal lattice. An oxygen‐vacancy‐induced topotactic phase transition from perovskite (PV) to brownmillerite (BM) is achieved in epitaxial La _0.6 Sr _0.4 CoO _3−δ (LSCO) thin films.
